General Torrent Questions

What is BitTorrent protocol?
BitTorrent is a file distribution system used for transferring files across network of people. As you download a file, BitTorrent places what you download on upload for other users; when multiple people are downloading the same file at the same time they upload pieces of the file to each other. BitTorrent pieces together the file you are downloading, to where the first part of a file you get may be the last part someone else gets. As you continue to retrieve the file, BitTorrent also uploads data to other users. Here is wikipedia article if you'd like to know more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent

What is torrent file?
Torrent file is a computer file that contains metadata about files and folders to be distributed, and usually also a list of the network locations of trackers, which are computers that help participants in the system find each other and form efficient distribution groups. A torrent file does not contain the content to be distributed; it only contains information about those files, such as their names, sizes, folder structure, and cryptographic hash values for verifying file integrity.
Torrent files are normally named with the extension .torrent, as in MyFile.torrent. Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrent_file

What is magnet link?
A BitTorrent magnet link contains all the information needed to start downloading the files from peers directly. It is a server-less way of retrieving the right information to start downloading the requested files. A magnet link allows you to download files from other peers in the BitTorrent network without need to download torrent file. Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnet_link

What is torrent tracker?
A BitTorrent tracker is a server that assists in the communication between peers using the BitTorrent protocol. But usually people call web sites that index torrents a torrent tracker.

What are the popular torrent trackers / torrent indexer sites?
There are a lot of them. You can find list of most popular trackers here: http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-popular-torrent-sites-of-2013-130106/. There are trackers dedicated for different countries.

Why my downloads are slow?
BitTorrent is a distributed Peer to Peer protocol, which means that there is no central storage for the content you are downloading. Instead torrent content is distributed between others BitTorrent clients like yours. The more clients or peers have this torrent opened, the faster your download would be. There are some abandoned torrents which no one is seeding anymore. So our suggestion would be to select torrents with higher number of seeds and peers. This would speed up your download.

Why background download does not work for me?
Background download is only available in paid version of Torrent RT and it definitely works, but unfortunately it is not as good as you might expect. Windows Store infrastructure doesn't support background mode, but we found a workaround to make it work by accessing audio stream. It is not perfect - when you run another application which plays something in background it overrides whatever Torrent RT is doing. Torrent RT also can't prevent tablet from going into sleeping mode. There is no better way to do it now. Hopefully Microsoft would add ability to run programs in background to next Windows version.
You still can flip Torrent RT into snapped mode, and it'll prevent if from suspending.

I've paid $2 for Torrent RT, but for some reason I don't like it anymore. Can you refund?
Windows Store infrastructure does not allow us to process refunds. Please contact our support at torrentrts@gmail.com and we'll try to address issues with our application to make sure that you are fully satisfied. We are working hard to make Torrent RT best BitTorrent downloader for Windows RT and Windows 8.

What is the difference between paid and free versions?
There are 2 differences:
1. Paid version has limited background mode support, while free version doesn't have it at all. You can read explanation about it above.
2. Free version has non-intrusive ads banner.
Other than that both versions have similar functionality.

Torrent Search questions

I see "service unavailable" error message when I'm trying to search for torrents. What is wrong?
We rely on torrent tracker web sites in order to provide search functionality. Those web sites might be down or blocked by Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
If you see this error message, please try another provider by selecting one in a drop down list next to search button. If none of them works for you, then still can add torrents or magnet links from other sources. Here is a a list of most popular trackers: http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-popular-torrent-sites-of-2013-130106/

I don't see my favorite torrent tracker in a list, can you add it?
Please send us email at torrentrts@gmail.com, and we'll try to do that.
